How do you make dumplings from scratch? | How do you make vegan dumplings from scratch?

Making dumplings from scratch takes time but worth it. Homemade dumplings are far better than ready to made. In this recipe, I made it from scratch provided with step by step pictures and tricks. 

How do you make vegetarian dumplings from scratch?

Being a vegetarian, I always hunt for famous recipe and try it in vegetarian way and this dumpling recipe is one among that. Its not easy to come get perfection when comes to innovation. But I try and test many times and provide you tips or tricks, which I learnt from trial 🙂 .

How long does it take to cook dumplings? 

It depends upon water’s temperature. Medium flame is suited for perfect cooking, it took around 15 mins to get cooked properly. One can notice it by transparency of wrap.

Why are my dumplings chewy?

Dumplings usually becomes chewy due to 2 reasons. Firstly, if you over or under cooked it. And secondly, when the thickness of wrap is too thick i.e not opaque.

How many dumplings should you eat?

As much as you can 😛 , well its healthy and irresistible. Although after eating 4-5  medium sized dumplings,  you will feel full.

What goes well with dumplings?

This is good question, I prefer my favorite Schezwan sauce as it taste spicy goes well with dumplings / momos but you can try soy sauce, soup or ketchup too.

3 cups all purpose flour

1 cup carrot grated

1 cup onion finely chopped

and 1 cup spring onion finely chopped

2 cups cabbage grated

1 teaspoon garlic finely chopped

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Ingredients to make Dumplings

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup carrot grated
  • 1 cup onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup spring onion finely chopped
  • 2 cups cabbage grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger grated
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Salt as per taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper powder

How to Make dumplings

    Steps for making Dumpling Fillings | Momos Fillings

    • Firstly to start with fillings of momos or dumplings, wash all the vegetables properly with water.
    • Likewise chop the onions, garlic and spring onion.
    • Furthermore, grate the carrot, cabbage and ginger. You can also add the ingredients of your choice. Note: Just make sure to grate the hard ingredients i.e which takes longer time to get cooked and finely chopped the soft ingredients.
    • Now turn on the stove with medium heat.
    • Place in a deep frying pan, after some time add oil to it.
    • As soon as oil gets heated add finely chopped garlic and grated ginger to oil and cook it until it turns light golden brown.
    • Later, add chopped onion and cook till it turns transparent.
    • Afterwards, add grated cabbage and carrot and cook for a few minutes.
    • Finally, add spring onions and cook for a few more minutes.
    • Note: Don’t over cook the vegetables, vegetables are cooked with intention to remove raw taste and some water from it.
    • Moreover, when you find it cooked with no water visible from vegetables then turn off the flame.
    • Allow the content to cool.
    • When the mixture is cooled, now add spices such as 1 teaspoon black pepper powder, salt as per taste and 1 tablespoon soy sauce.
    • Note: Reason why we added salt and spice late is to avoid excess water secretion from vegetables.

    Homemade Dumpling

      Steps for making dumplings wrap

      • Start with a mixing bowl
      • Add 3 cups of all purpose flour to it.
      • Furthermore, add 2 tablespoon of vegetable oil and salt as per taste to the flour.
      • Mix it well, add little water and start kneading. Repeat this step till the dough is ready.
      • Note: Add water to flour progressively, to avoid dough from getting too wet or too dry.
      • Cover the dough with wet cloth for sometime.

      Chinese Dumplings Recipe | Homemade momos

        Steps for making dumplings

        • Take a small amount of dough and roll between palms to make a smooth ball.
        • Dust some dry flour on base and above the ball before rolling it with a roller.
        • Note: Dusting flour every time not only prevents dough from sticking on base but also helps to stretch the wrap wider.
        • Stop rolling, once you are satisfied with the size. Make sure it’s thin enough to appear little opaque in light.
        • Now place the filling in the wrap with a spoon. Make sure you don’t over or under fill it.
        • Note: If you are a beginner then add only 1 medium spoon, or else you can add 1 and half medium spoonfuls of fillings to wrap.
        • Apply some water on the edges before forming its shapes.
        • Note: Applying some water on edges will help the edges to stick better while warping.
        • Begin with gathering the edges on above the other as shown in picture.
        • Note: Don’t worry if it doesn’t go well, just make sure it’s closed properly and twist the mouth of dumplings / momos.
        • Repeat the above step with the remaining dough and fillings to form different shapes of dumplings momos.

        Steamed Dumplings

          Steps for steaming dumplings

          • Place a deep pan / kadai on medium flame.
          • Pour 3-4 cups of water to it and allow it to get heated.
          • Note: Make sure the water is below the level of dumplings, so that dumplings / momos don’t get wet after placing the steamer.
          • Here I am using bamboo steamer, you can use any steamer.
          • Place parchment paper or butter paper on a steamer and poke some holes in it.
          • Note: parchment paper will prevent dumplings / momos from sticking on base, also poking holes will help in getting proper steam
          • Place all the dumplings / momos in the steamer and close the lid.
          • Allow the dumplings / momos to get cooked for around 15 to 20 minutes.
          • Note: Meanwhile you can also turn the dumplings / momos so that it gets cooked from all sides properly.
          • Serve the dumplings / momos hot with chutney or sauce.
