Arthritis – Painful Joint Condition Causing Pain

ARTHRITIS

  • A painful condition in which joint cartilage gradually breaks down, and rheumatoid arthritis. A systemic disease that can cause severe pain and crippling.
  • People with osteoarthritis may have inherently defective cartilage that makes it vulnerable to normal wear and tear.

ARTHRITIS AND FISH

  • Studies have found that patients with RA can experience a marked reduction in swelling, pain, and redness of joints by adding omega-3 fatty acids to their diet. These are found in salmon, mackerel, and sardines, as well as in other cold-water fish.
  • The omega-3 fats have anti-inflammatory properties, whereas the more common omega-6 fats found in soy, corn, safflower, and sunflower oils are proinflammatory.

FOOD ALLERGIES

  • Some evidence indicates that a small percentage of people with arthritis have food allergies that exacerbate joints symptoms.
  • Common Offenders include shellfish, soy, wheat, corn, alcohol, coffee, and possibly certain food additives.
  • Researchers have found that, for these people, removing the allergy-causing foods from the diet has resulted in less pain, remove it from your diet for two weeks and pay attention to any symptom changes. Then add it back, and see if your symptoms worsen.

WEIGHT FACTOR

  • Obesity greatly increases the risk and severity of osteoarthritis. Even a little extra weight strains the knees and hips. Losing weight and increasing exercise often improve symptoms.
  • Patients with rheumatoid arthritis often have the opposite problem; they may be too thin due to lack of appetite, chronic pain, or depression.

VEGETARIAN DIET

  • Researchers theorize that one benefit of this strict diet comes from fruits, vegetables, and grains. which contribute important antioxidants that can help counter some of the inflammation.
  • The diet is also very low in or free from animal fats, which may promote the production of inflammatory immune compounds. A strict vegetarian diet requires professional supervision to ensure proper nutrition.
