What is red lentil soup?

Lentil soup is a vegetarian-friendly soup packed with protein and fiber. The combination of protein and fiber helps with satiety, making red lentil soup a satisfying and potentially weight-friendly option.

Lentils come in many kinds that can be used to make soup, including red, yellow, black lentils.. We’re using the red variety to make today’s red lentil soup.

  • Red lentils – 1 cup
  • Oil or butter – 1 tbsp
  • Minced garlic & ginger – 2 tbsp
  • Onions – 1 /2 cup
  • Tomato diced – 1 cup
  • Cilantro leaves – for garnish
  • Black pepper powder – 1 tbsp
  • Ground cumin – 1 tsp
  • cayenne – 1 tsp (optional)
  • water – as per requirement
  • Coconut milk- 1 tbsp (optional)

Pre-Preparation for Red lentils soup

  • Wash red lentils and keep to soak for 1 hr.
  • To extract fresh coconut milk, grind white part of the coconut with plain water . Then strain the mixture.
  • Peel and slice the tomato, onion and fresh ginger and garlic.
  • Wash and chop the cilantro leaves for garnish.
  • Grind cumin and pepper into fine powder.

Cooking the Red Lentils 

  • Wash the soaked lentils once.
  • Bring water to boil in a pot and add the lentils.
  • Let it boil and skim off any froth with a spoon. Reduce heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes until the lentils are tender.

(Tip : boil for 15 mins and switch off  stove and close the pot to allow lentils to cook in residual heat. This prevents too much of energy usage)

How To Make Red Lentil Soup?

  • Heat the oil in a large saucepan.
  • Over a low heat, cook the onion for 5 minutes until transparent.
  • Add garlic and ginger and cook for a further 2 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomatoes and cook for 3 minutes, until they become mushy.
  • Now , add the cooked lentils giving a light stir and add 1/4 cup of water. ( For mild sweetness , add coconut milk).
  • Let it boil for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Top with chopped cilantro leaves and season with cumin & black pepper or cayenne powder.


This version of soup has cayenne for extra spice. You can adjust pepper as per your level.

Serve hot in a bowl and enjoy !!

1.Can we add veggies to the soup?

Yes, we can add veggies like carrots, French beans etc.. potatoes really go well with this soup.

2. Can we skip the coconut milk?

Yes if you feel the soup is too heavy and thick skip the coconut part it still taste good

3. How to speed up the cooking lentils?

Increase the soaking time up to 2 hrs. to speed up the cooking process . Or try this hack – Add a pinch of baking soda while cooking lentils to cook faster !!

4. What if soup becomes very thick?

If soup becomes very thick while serving, do add some water and dilute to consistency needed . Also slightly heat while serving.

5. Can toddlers and elderly people take lentils soup?

Lentils are generally easy to digest, and the soup form can be particularly gentle on the stomach. So it is absolutely fine for young and older ones.
