Double ka meetha is a traditional Indian dessert made using bread. This nawabi sweet is also called as an Indian bread pudding. Double ka meetha is basically fried bread dipped in freshly made caramelised sugar syrup. In Hyderabad, this dish is a very popular dessert. You might be familiar with another popular Indian sweet “Gulab Jamun”. This sweet bread pudding also uses the same process as gulab jamun. Personally, double ka meetha has been one of my favourite Indian desserts for a long time now. It is a staple sweet option at Nawabi weddings or any Indian weddings as a matter of fact.

Tips for making bread pudding

While making this dessert, keep in mind to adjust the sweet consistency according to your liking. However, the dish might be too sweet if you add too much sugar. You can use milkmaid if you do not have mawa. It is easily available at any Indian supermarket. It is important to keep in mind that mawa by itself is really sweet. Adjust your sugar consistency according to the amount of sugar you prefer. As I said earlier, you can also use sugar alternatives or sugar supplements if you are on a diet or have any dietary restrictions. However, this might alter the taste of the dessert a bit. If you are using artificial sweeteners just replace sugar in this recipe and continue as usual.

This traditional bread pudding can be made using brown bread. However, I personally prefer using milk bread or white bread. Although if you are health conscious and want to keep the calories in check, you can use brown bread. Another alternative for milk bread is whole wheat bread or aata bread. This type of bread has a heat flavour to it just like brown bread. Keep in mind that this might alter the taste of the double ka meetha.

I would suggest you make the sugar syrup a little thin and not too thick. If your sugar syrup is too thick and condensed, the bread might come out dry. Although to prevent that from happening, you can make the sugar syrup a little watery so that the bread can soak up the moisture.

Conclusion

This recipe is really easy to make. This particular Nawabi dessert has a special place in every Hyderabadi’s heart. To note, it is a staple Indian dessert with a heart-warming flavour and tender taste.
